Responsible Cultivation

We are dedicated to protecting medical cannabis patients' rights, to preserving the environment, and to guarding the health and safety of the Santa Cruz community.

On April 14, 2015 Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors voted to ban commercial cannabis cultivation in Santa Cruz County. The only cannabis cultivation allowed under ordinance 5201 was a personal 10x10 sq. ft. allowance per residence/parcel.  One cannabis collective was the only exception and they were permitted to cultivate as usual. This was an unacceptable solution.

WHAT WE DID:

We (RCSC) petitioned this ordinance to halt its implementation. Concurrently with this effort, we’ve begun drafting an initiative of sensible regulations that reflects the values of our diverse community that the county can vote on if need be.

On May 7, 2015 we filed 11,210 signatures with the county. 7,248 valid signatures were required to qualify the referendum for the ballot.

The ordinance was suspended when the Santa Cruz County Clerk Elections Department confirmed on May 11, 2015, that the referendum petitions contained more than the minimum number of signatures. The county had 30 calendar days, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, from the date the petition was filed to verify the validity of the signatures.

On June 17, 2015 the County Clerk for the County of Santa Cruz confirmed that the referendum had qualified. The ban ordinance was suspended until the supervisors decided to either repeal the law or let the county voters vote at the June 2016 primary election whether to approve or reject it.

On August 4, 2015 the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors opted to repeal ordinance 5201 rather than let it go to vote with a 4 to 1 vote with Supervisor Caput voting in favor of letting the ban go to vote.

Also on August 4, 2015 the Board of Supervisors approved appointments to the thirteen member Cannabis Cultivation Choices Committee that is tasked with developing recommendations that protect our neighborhoods, protect our environment, and ensure an adequate supply of medical cannabis for those with a doctor's recommendation.

We’re making history.
